for Sandra Bland

May fast the hope of fire
come generous to the day and night
with the omens of our stars.

Darvocet don’t pity us.
Beneath our clothes is the first teacher
grown man’s eyes can’t translate.
May fast the hope of fire
come generous to the day and night
with the omens of our stars.

Rest on wet eyelids, in blood.
Take our offering,
what is inside out
and outside in.
Our strength,
our bones,
our blood,
our bodies,
make circle the soul.
May hands open and close
their brown warmth
in this sticky red psalm.

May fast the hope of fire
come generous to the day and night
with the omens of our stars.

Amen.
