May in Fruitvale

may day in the streets
chestnut     mahogany     cherry
shaded people
weave in and out
like workers’ hands through soil
a mother’s hands through daughter’s braids
lovers’ fingers interlaced embraced
fold into one another

butterfly-winged migrants
line a march or a parade
step a protest or a dance
cry a demand or a poem
beat a concert of Korean drums
back-up a brass liberation
or harmonize a people’s song

without question
we celebrate
the beauty of work
a freedom that moves
that sings gorgeous
